Won Bass / Havasu – Final

Posted by John Murray | Other Tournaments | Monday 13 February 2012 2:21 pm

Ended up with another 12.63 lbs, and 14th place. The fishing got tough for me the second day, and we ended up with 8 keepers. I was split shotting wave tiki droppers and throwing jigs in water 5 to 20 feet. I did break one off in a structure, threw a jig in there and caught it, it still had my broke off hook in his mouth! Havasu is a great lake, and the smallies in there are beautiful, it was great to get back there. I want to thank my old buddy Ted Miller for prefishing with me, and I hope to do that again. This Saturday I will be flying to Portland for Pacific Boatland, if you are in the area, stop by and say hi!!

Won Bass / Havasu – Day 1

Posted by John Murray | Other Tournaments | Saturday 11 February 2012 7:32 pm

Caught a limit of smallies early, then caught a couple of good largies, and ended up in 15th with 14.33 lbs. The wind really blew today, tomorrow is supposed to be calm, so the weights could change. This lake is full of big fish, so your fortunes could change at any time. My partner broke off a big one today, and I had a good one pull off, so tomorrow I’d better clean up my fishing!!!

Havasu prefish for WON Bass

What a lake! I’ve only fished Havsu once in the last 5 years, and it has really changed. My first fish was about 5lbs today, and super=fat! After fishing Havasu for over 20 years before, I’ve never seen anything like it is now. I fished with my old friend, Ted Miller, and we ended up with our 5 best for about 17lbs. That wouldn’t even get a top 3 hear now. They are not easy to catch, but when you do figure something out, they are big.We have one more day of prefish, then the Won Bass starts on saturday. Should be a fun tournament, and I’ll let you know all the details , because I’m not fishing in the FLW the next week.

FLW – Everstart / Shasta Final

The second day, I caught a couple limits of keepers, but no good ones! I ended up in 27th place with 18.1lbs. My problem is that I love to fish deep, and was too stubborn to run the banks with an A-rig for big ones. I had found two huge schools of spots on deep breaks, 30- 60 ft deep. There were some 2.5 lbers in those schools, but unfortunately my co’s caught all of them! I was drop shotting robos and Wave Tiki-drops on those fish, and the tiki drops really caught the ones near the shad schools. Tommy J and I stayed at my friend, Jordan’s house, and were spoiled by great cooking from his wife, Kaela. Thanks guys!! I then stayed for the college tourney and drew the ASU team of Joey and Mark. It was a great day, and they caught almost two limits on jigs. I really enjoyed watching those guys attack a lake with no prefish- they did a great job! Overall, it was a great week, but I’m happy to be home to Amy and TJ. I’ll be heading to Vegas this weekend for the ISE show, so check it out if you’re in Vegas for Superbowl weekend

Had a great day on Shasta today, weighed 9-8 lbs and sit in 20th place. These spotted bass are so fun to catch, just my style 30-60 feet deep on dropshots! My co-angler, Tobey finished in 4th, so we had a fun day. Goin back out tomorrow and hoping for a big bite to move up….
