Won Bass US Open at Lake Mead / Final

Posted by John Murray | Other Tournaments | Thursday 21 July 2011 3:04 pm

As usual, Mead turned tough the last 2 days. Both days I weighed about 8lbs, and moved up to 12th place. It was a great time, but very tiring. I caught most of my fish on a River2Sea touchdown jig tipped with a Wave grass craw. Both the smallies and large mouth were heavily feeding on crawfish, in depths down to 50ft. I’m gonna rest a couple days then fly back to Illinois to see Amy and TJ!

Won Bass US Open at Lake Mead / Day 1

Beautiful day on Lake Mead, cloudy, calm and cool. Fishing was fair, I caught a limit by 7:30 and caught about two limits. The bad part was that I lost about a 3.5 lb smallie, and my partner lost one even bigger. Could have had a big day, leading easily. As it was, I ended up with just under 10lbs, about 15th place. It is a three day tournament, so we’ll go out and do it all again tomorrow!

Won Bass US Open at Lake Mead / Prefish

Spent Tuesday, Friday and Saturday out on Lake Mead prefishing for the Open. The lake is up 17 feet, and looks great, flooded trees everywhere. For me, two days were tough and one was decent. I’m going to key in on smallies instead of largemouths. I wouldn’t be surprised at a 15lb bag of smallmouths, I caught one almost 4lbs, as did others! Consistency will be the key, get 10lbs a day to keep you in it. It’s great to be on Mead, and I’m ready to go!

Icast

Amy and I are in Vegas for Icast and the US Open. TJ is back in Illinois with his aunt Lynn and his cousins.

Tough week for us, but he’s having fun! I’m working for River2Sea, and visiting other sponsors, Amy is enjoying the pool. Always fun to see all the new products, but I’m ready to get fishing on Mead!

2011 Bass Pro Shops Northern Open #1 – James River – Final

Another poor first day, cost me big. I caught a good limit the second day to just miss the money by 3 oz. I fished the same basic places both days, but stayed shallow the second day, that’s where the fish are. I caught a few on the River2Sea bully- wa, and the rest flipping. The tide is so critical there, it takes time to really understand it. Now I’m in Illinois packing for Las Vegas. First, the ICAST show for River2Sea, then the WON Bass US Open on Mead! Cannot wait!! I want to say thanks to my team partner Steve M, for lending me his brand new Ranger and truck, it’ll save me 6 days of driving! Amy is coming to Vegas for a few days with me , and TJ is staying with his aunt Lynn, our little getaway to Vegas! I’ll let you know how Mead is…..
